It could benefit a society by the fact that it can join the society to believe in one way, but not completely the same. But the way it can also trouble a society is that if someone thinks a slightly different way than someone else it could cause a mess of problems and people to start fighting and major disagreements. That would not be good to have a society go through that over religion or anything.
